Indian railway has started the bedroll facility in ac coaches. Bedrolls are packs that include blankets, pillows, and linens, among other things. Bedroll is a scheme that was started by Mr. Suresh Prabhu, the Union Minister of Indian Railways, on 07 Feb 2016. When this scheme was launched the bedroll facility was only available for only to the Chennai Central Railway Station and Thiruvananthapuram Railway Station. But then it was extended to all major railway stations in India.
There are two types of bedroll offered by the Indian railway in this scheme:
Type 1: It is a non-woven bedroll kit which consists one pillow and two cotton bedsheets at the cost of Rs. 140.
Type 2: It is a bedroll kit which consists one blanket in a non-woven bag at the cost of Rs. 110.
The best thing you will like about this facility is that you are allowed to take them to your home after use. It is also disposable, which is another great thing. The pricing of bedrolls are possible to change at any time. Passengers should check the IRCTC tourism website for the most up-to-date prices.
How to book a bedroll?
You can book a bedroll through the IRCTC website. You will have to provide the PNR number of your confirmed or RAC ticket. After validating the 10-digit PNR number, the system will display details on bedroll availability, type, and pricing.
To book bedrolls online, follow the procedures below:
- Go to the IRCTC website and login into your account.
- After logging in, select the bedroll option.
- Click the search tab after entering the PNR number of your Confirmed/RAC rail ticket.
- Now you will have to select the bedroll kit you want to purchase
- Now you can choose to pay with a credit card, a debit card, or a net banking account.
Remember that passengers are responsible for any bank transaction fees that may apply. If bedroll booking is successful an E-mail and SMS confirmation will be sent to you. Passengers should purchase Bedroll between the hours of 06.00 a.m. to 22.00 p.m., as this is when the service is offered.
Do i get Refund for Non-Delivery of Bedroll
Sometimes it is possible that you won’t get a bedroll on the train after booking it. It can happen for various reasons, suppose you have booked your bedroll but the train reaches the scheduled station late or anywhere between 22.00 pm. to 6.00 am. If your bedroll is not delivered to you then you will get your refund but the bank transaction charges won’t be included.
Advance Reservation Period for Bedroll
If you want to book a bedroll in advance then you can book a bedroll 60 days before the date of the journey. If you have not booked your Bedroll until the day of your journey, you can do so up to five hours before the train’s scheduled departure.
What is the IRCTC Bedroll Cancellation and Amendment Rules
Here are some IRCTC bedroll facility rules that you should know before using the bedroll facility:
- You can not resell your bedroll after using them.
- Passengers will not be refunded if their bedroll is changed or cancelled within 5 hours before the train’s scheduled departure.
- Any changes or cancellations to the Bedroll order must be done using a registered ID on the IRCTC website.
- Passengers will be charged a 20% cancellation fee if they amend or cancel their bedroll less than five hours before the train’s scheduled departure.
If you don’t receive your bedroll throughout the journey you can request a refund within 20 hours of the train’s arrival. You should also certify your ticket from the TTE for non-supply of Bedrolls because you will need it while claiming for a refund.
Does Indian Railway Provide Bedrolls in All Trains?
Initially, this service was only provided for Chennai Central Railway Station and Thiruvananthapuram Railway Station but later it was available for all. In order to make passengers’ journeys more comfortable, Indian Railways provides Bedrolls in all AC classes. All train travellers with a Confirmed/RAC ticket are usually given a bedroll kit. The bedroll kit has one face towel, one blanket, one pillow, and two bedsheets.
Is IRCTC Providing Bedroll Facility During COVID Time?
In covid was on the peak the bedroll facility was discontinued by IRCTC but they were providing germ-free disposable bedroll kits from on payment of Rs. 300. These are specially designed bedroll kit containing a mask, toothbrush, comb, paper shop, and an alcohol-based sanitizer along with the blanket, bedsheet, and a pillow with cover. This was a great initiative in pandemic to counter the threat of Coronavirus and keep the train moving.
Is Bedroll facility available for sleeper class?
IRCTC does not provide bedroll facility in sleeper class but you can get this service through IRCTC personalized takeaway bedrolls scheme. There are two types of bedroll kit available under this scheme. E-bedrolls can be purchased from multi-purpose stalls at railway stations or booked online through the IRCTC tourism website.
Assume you’re travelling by train on the South Eastern Railway. If you specified Bedroll on the requisition form for reservation while purchasing your ticket, bedrolls will be provided in sleeping class.
